About The King

The year was 1981. Harvey C. Gordon appeared on the TV show A.M. Chicago (shortly before it became The Oprah Winfrey Show) and had a pun showdown with a prominent Canadian punster. Mr. Gordon won the contest, and after his victory, many referred to him as “The King of Puns.”

Mr. Gordon is a Chicago area attorney (nobody’s perfect) who has been practicing law for many years (believing practice makes perfect). He developed a passion for pun humor as far back as his college days at Washington University in St. Louis while studying a far less humorous field, Economics. Mr. Gordon then attended Northwestern University Law School, and after practicing law for a while, submitted the manuscript for his first book, PUNishment: The Art of Punning or How to Lose Friends and Agonize People, to 75 publishers who did not want to take a chance on an unknown author. Undeterred, Mr. Gordon took a break from practicing law, and self-published the book and promoted it into a bestseller in the Chicagoland area.

Based on this success, Warner Books (now Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group) acquired the rights to a second edition of PUNishment, published Mr. Gordon’s second book, Grime and PUNishment: A Collection of Sexciting Puns, and sent him on two cross-country publicity tours for the books. His third book, PUNdemonium: Puns Are Everywhere!, and his fourth book, Baby Power: A Book About the Indignities of Babyhood, were published as a joint venture between Mr. Gordon’s own publishing company, The Punster’s Press, and Contemporary Books in Chicago, with both books selling well. In total, Mr. Gordon has sold over 350,000 copies of his books, has appeared on over 100 TV and radio shows across the U.S. and Canada, and has been featured in numerous major publications. In response to requests from his many readers in the vast pun kingdom, he is creating new editions of his special works, all published through his publishing company, The Punster’s Press.

It has not been easy for Mr. Gordon as a punster lawyer. One time, a client asked him the difference between “unlawful” and “illegal.” He told the client that “unlawful” was something that was against the law and “illegal” was a sick bird. He never saw that client again. Another time, upon returning to his law office after lunch, the receptionist announced, “Your wife just called,” to which he replied, “Which one?” A senior partner nearby looked at him disdainfully and sniffed, “You have more than one?” He shot back: “Yes, and it’s bigamy to admit it.” His tenure with that law firm was not lengthy.

When Mr. Gordon is not punning/losing friends/agonizing people, he loves to follow Northwestern sports, the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bears and spend as much time as he can being active outdoors. He is also working on a science-fiction screenplay and a sequel to a well-known Charles Dickens work. Since achieving international notoriety, Mr. Gordon has had a passion for sharing his expertise and incomparable humor with aspiring punsters. He continues to work on projects to expand the noble art of punning and help others who are looking to better their own punmanship.
